Filipino Card Game
Tongits is more than a card game – it is a Filipino tradition. Whether you learned it from your lola, played it during fiestas, or just picked it up with your barkada, mmmjl brings that same excitement online with real-money prizes and tournaments running every single day.
About the Game
Ask any Filipino and chances are they know exactly what Tongits is. This three-player card game has been a staple at family gatherings, neighbourhood porches, and barkada nights for decades. It is fast, it is strategic, and it rewards players who think a move or two ahead – which is probably why it never gets old.
At its core, Tongits is a draw-and-discard game played with a standard 52-card deck. Each player starts with 12 or 13 cards and the goal is simple: reduce the total point value of the cards in your hand by forming melds – sets of three or four cards of the same rank, or sequences of three or more cards in the same suit. The player who empties their hand first wins outright, but you can also win by having the lowest hand value when the draw pile runs out or when someone calls a challenge.
What makes Tongits special compared to other card games is the bluffing element. You can "fight" or challenge another player's call, turning what seemed like a settled round into a dramatic showdown. That back-and-forth, reading your opponent's face and deciding when to strike – that is the magic that keeps generations of Filipinos coming back for more. And now, thanks to mmmjl, you can experience all of that from your phone, anytime you feel like playing.

How to Play
Never played before? No worries – mmmjl makes it easy to jump in and learn as you go.
The dealer shuffles the 52-card deck and distributes 12 cards to each of the two non-dealer players, and 13 cards to the dealer. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the centre of the table.
Arrange your hand into melds – three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three Kings), or three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4-5-6 of Spades). Unmelded cards count against your score as dead weight.
On your turn, draw the top card from the pile or pick up the card your opponent just discarded. Then discard one card face-up. Keep building melds and shrinking your hand value with every turn.
You can add cards to existing melds on the table – whether they belong to you or an opponent. This lets you offload high-value cards and reduce your hand count efficiently.
Empty your entire hand and shout "Tongits!" to win automatically. Or, if the draw pile runs out, any player can call "Burned" to trigger a showdown where hand totals are compared. You can also "fight" a call if you think you have the lower count.
The winner collects from the other players based on the agreed stake per round. On mmmjl, winnings are credited instantly to your account in Philippine pesos – withdraw to GCash or Maya anytime.
Scoring
In Tongits, unmelded cards in your hand count toward your total score at the end of a round. Lower is better. Here is the standard point value for each card type used at mmmjl tables.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Low value – great to hold |
| 2 through 9 | Face value | 2 = 2pts, 5 = 5pts, etc. |
| 10 | 10 points | Discard early if unmelded |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | High risk if held loose |
| Queen (Q) | 10 points | High risk if held loose |
| King (K) | 10 points | High risk if held loose |
Face cards (10, J, Q, K) are the biggest score burden. Getting them into melds quickly or discarding them early is usually the right move.

Strategy Guide
Tongits is a game of skill as much as luck. These tips will not guarantee every win, but they will cut your losses and sharpen your play significantly.
The sooner you get cards off your hand and onto the table, the less exposure you have if someone calls Burned. Every meld is insurance against losing a high-count showdown.
A lone Jack or Queen sitting in your hand for more than two turns is almost always better discarded. Ten-point cards with no meld partner are dead weight – get rid of them before they cost you a round.
Every card your opponent throws away is a clue. If they keep discarding from one suit, they probably have a run forming in another. Withhold cards they clearly need, even if you would otherwise throw them yourself.
Calling Burned when your total is still above 30 is risky. Wait until you are confident your count is the lowest – or at least hold a fight card ready in case an opponent challenges you back.
Adding cards to an opponent's meld can clear your hand count quickly, but it also helps them. Time your lay-offs to your advantage – use them when you need to drop a high card fast, not to be generous.
If you are sitting on a low count and an opponent calls Burned, having a ready fight can flip the round in your favour. Do not use your fight cards carelessly early in the game.
Do not grab from the discard pile just because the card looks useful. Assess whether it actually completes a meld or brings you closer to a meld within the next two draws before picking it up.
